Professor Niveen M. Khashab
Associate Dean of Physical Science and Engineering Division and Professor of Chemistry, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia
Professor Nevin Khashab received the 2023 Great Arab Minds Award for Natural Sciences in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the synthesis, design, and application of nanomaterials and to their use across medical, pharmaceutical, industrial, and environmental fields.
Professor Khashab leads the Smart Hybrid Materials (SHMs) Laboratory in Saudi Arabia. She is a Professor of Chemistry, Chair of the Chemical Science Program, and Associate Dean for Student Affairs in the Physical Science and Engineering Division (PSE) at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).
She holds a Bachelor of Science from the American University of Beirut and earned her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Florida, where she trained with Nobel Prize winner Sir Fraser Stoddart.
Her research has led to the development of novel light-responsive nanoparticles that self-degrade when exposed to light, as well as advanced delivery systems for proteins and genetic material. These innovations have opened new possibilities in sensing, packaging, drug delivery, industrial applications, and environmental solutions, including sustainable agriculture.
Professor Khashab has published more than 275 scientific papers in organic chemistry and nanoscience and serves on the editorial boards of ten leading scientific journals. She received the Cram Lehn Pedersen (CLP) Prize in Supramolecular Chemistry in 2023 and the L’Oréal-UNESCO International Awards for Women in Science in 2017.
